Cross-book arbitrage with both legs quoted in the same scan window — locked profit, ranked by edge.
The Scout’s Notebook
A college basketball arbitrage is a two-sided bet on one game market whose best prices at two different sportsbooks imply less than 100% total probability, so the pair returns the same profit whoever covers. It exists because the books price a nightly card of dozens of college games at different speeds, and on the games nobody is watching the disagreement occasionally overshoots the vig.
The college card is wide and thin. Across the 365 Division I programmes of last season, a November weeknight can carry fifty games, the books that trade the ranked matchups price the rest of the card off a model, and a market only one book is quoting has no cross-book pair at all. The board counts those markets beside the arb count, so a quiet board reads as a measured quiet rather than a broken feed.
Until the season opens the desk is dark and says so in words. It needs no switch to light up: the first college game a book prices is scanned on the same cycle as every other league's.
Because no college basketball game is priced yet. The season opens in November and books post a college line two to three days before tip, so until then there is nothing to pair. The board says that in words rather than showing a spinner, and it fills by itself with the first priced slate.
Yes, on the four prop families the books post for college players — points, rebounds, assists and threes. They are quoted by fewer books than the spread and the total, so a prop pair is likelier to fail the contemporaneity gate than a game-line pair.
