How do sportsbook promos and free bets actually work?

A sportsbook promo — a deposit match, a bonus bet, or a 'bet $5 get $150' offer — is marketing credit with strings attached, and its real value is what survives after you turn it into withdrawable cash at minimal cost.

How it works & common questions

A bonus bet is not cash — it typically pays only the winnings, not the stake — so its expected value is a fraction of its face number. Betting it on longer odds and hedging the other side is what keeps the most of it.

How to convert a free bet into withdrawable cash

  1. Select the bonus bet and its book. Choose the sportsbook holding your free bet and its stake amount. The scanner reads that book's live odds so the math reflects the current market.
  2. Find the highest-retention long-odds side. The scanner ranks selections by retention — the share of the free bet's face value you keep. Longer odds on the free-bet side convert more of the bonus to cash.
  3. Place the free bet on that selection. Stake the bonus bet on the recommended long-odds side at its book. Free bets return winnings only (stake-not-returned), which is why long odds retain more.
  4. Hedge the opposite side at another book. Back the other outcome at a second sportsbook using the exact hedge stake the scanner shows, so one side always covers the other.
  5. Lock in the retained cash either way. Whichever result lands, the combined position returns the scanner's projected withdrawable cash — the guaranteed conversion of the bonus.

How much is a bonus bet actually worth?

A bonus bet is worth roughly 65-75% of its face value because it usually returns only the winnings, not the stake, and carries rollover conditions. Converting it through a low-hold two-sided pair preserves the most of that value.
