We are officially one month into the second half of the MLB season.
That means we're finally working with enough of a sample to start separating legitimate second-half breakouts from players who have simply caught fire for a few weeks.
From July 16 through August 16 , plenty of hitters have put together stretches that look incredible in the box score. But as we've talked about all season, fantasy managers shouldn't be evaluating hitters solely on batting average, home runs and RBI.
The question isn't just who has been good.
It's whose production we should actually trust moving forward.
For this exercise, we're digging into wOBA versus xwOBA, BABIP, barrel rate, hard-hit rate, exit velocity, batted-ball distribution and Statcast bat-tracking data to determine whether each player's second-half performance is supported by the way they're actually hitting the baseball.
Some of these starts look completely legitimate.
Others have some major warning signs underneath the surface.
Let's go back and forth and determine which second-half starts are REAL and which ones are FAKE .
1. Fernando Tatis Jr. — REAL
.292 AVG | .405 OBP | .594 SLG | .420 wOBA | 172 wRC+
At this point, I don't know how many different ways I can say it:
Keep buying Fernando Tatis Jr.
Tatis has been one of our favorite underlying-metric hitters, and his first month of the second half is showing exactly why.
He's hitting .292/.405/.594 , good for a ridiculous .999 OPS and 172 wRC+ .
Normally, production that extreme immediately makes me start looking for regression indicators.
With Tatis, they're difficult to find.
His .274 BABIP certainly isn't carrying the production. If anything, that's a surprisingly ordinary number for an athletic hitter making this quality of contact.
And that contact quality has been outstanding.
Tatis owns a 92.3 mph average exit velocity , 53.3% hard-hit rate and 14.1% barrel rate during this stretch.
His Statcast expected numbers agree. His actual .420 wOBA is accompanied by a .436 xwOBA , suggesting his underlying contact has actually deserved more production than he's received.
Then there's one of my favorite newer metrics: Ideal Attack Angle%.
Tatis sits at an absurd 62.1% Ideal Attack Angle rate .
He's consistently getting the bat into an excellent position at contact while simultaneously hitting the baseball extremely hard. That's exactly the combination we want when looking for sustainable power.
Add a 15.1% walk rate and only 11.1% strikeout rate , and this is an incredibly complete offensive profile.
Verdict: REAL
This isn't a hot streak I'm trying to sell. Tatis is crushing the baseball, controlling the strike zone, producing an excellent swing path and hasn't needed an inflated BABIP to do it.
2. Bryson Stott — FAKE
.319 AVG | .439 OBP | .511 SLG | .415 wOBA | 163 wRC+
Now we get our first example of why looking beyond the box score matters.
Stott has been fantastic since the break.
A .319 average, .439 OBP and 163 wRC+ certainly looks like a player fantasy managers should be trying to acquire.
The underlying contact profile isn't nearly as exciting.
Stott has produced only a 3.9% barrel rate during this stretch.
His hard-hit rate sits at just 41.6% , while his 90.0 mph average exit velocity is respectable but nowhere near what we'd expect from a hitter slugging over .500.
His expected statistics are also waving a pretty significant red flag.
Stott's .415 wOBA has come with only a .373 xwOBA .
That's a substantial gap.
His .319 average also comes with a .300 xBA , while his actual .511 slugging percentage sits well above his .406 xSLG .
The batted-ball results have simply been considerably better than the quality of contact would suggest.
His .378 BABIP provides another reason for skepticism.
Can Stott remain a productive fantasy hitter? Absolutely.
Do I believe the underlying profile supports a 163 wRC+ and .950 OPS moving forward?
No.
Verdict: FAKE
This doesn't mean Stott suddenly becomes useless. It means fantasy managers shouldn't value him based on what he's done over the last month. The expected numbers, barrel production and BABIP all point toward regression.
3. Wilyer Abreu — REAL
.245 AVG | .344 OBP | .623 SLG | .398 wOBA | 155 wRC+
If you've been following our recent fantasy articles, Abreu's inclusion shouldn't be surprising.
We already identified him as a buy based on his underlying numbers.
Since then, the profile has remained incredibly strong.
Abreu's .245 batting average isn't remotely representative of how well he's hitting the baseball.
His .398 wOBA is backed by an even better .417 xwOBA .
His .245 average comes with a .274 xBA .
And perhaps most importantly, his power has been completely legitimate.
Abreu has posted a 16.5% barrel rate , 52.9% hard-hit rate , 89.4 mph average exit velocity and 110.8 mph max exit velocity .
His .623 slugging percentage essentially matches his .621 xSLG .
That's about as clean as it gets.
Then look at the BABIP:
.203.
That's what makes this profile particularly interesting.
Abreu has managed a 155 wRC+ despite a .203 BABIP .
He's not producing because everything is falling for a hit. He's producing because when he gets the baseball in the air, he's doing serious damage.
His 51.2% Ideal Attack Angle rate provides another encouraging indicator that the power isn't random.
Verdict: REAL
Abreu's surface numbers aren't hiding regression. If anything, the batting average is hiding just how good he's been. The expected production, barrel rate, hard contact and swing characteristics all support the breakout.
4. Chase Meidroth — FAKE
.315 AVG | .404 OBP | .562 SLG | .415 wOBA | 170 wRC+
A 170 wRC+ immediately grabs your attention.
So does a .315/.404/.562 slash line.
But Meidroth might have one of the clearest gaps on this list between actual production and the underlying quality of contact.
Start with wOBA.
He's produced a .415 wOBA .
His xwOBA?
.332.
That's an enormous difference.
His .562 slugging percentage is accompanied by just a .390 xSLG , while his .315 batting average comes with a .253 xBA .
That's three different expected metrics pointing in the same direction.
Then we get into the actual contact.
Meidroth has produced just a 5.4% barrel rate and 37.8% hard-hit rate with an 88.2 mph average exit velocity .
Those are not the numbers of a hitter I expect to continue slugging .562.
His .338 BABIP has helped, but this is about much more than BABIP regression. The expected statistics are telling us the contact itself simply hasn't justified the results.
There are things to like here. Meidroth's 11.4% walk rate and 16.2% strikeout rate show legitimate control of the zone.
That skill can keep him useful.
It just doesn't make the current power output sustainable.
Verdict: FAKE
The plate discipline is real. The 170 wRC+ isn't . His enormous gaps in AVG/xBA, SLG/xSLG and wOBA/xwOBA make him one of the clearest regression candidates of the group.
5. Jackson Merrill — REAL
.324 AVG | .353 OBP | .631 SLG | .414 wOBA | 167 wRC+
If you're looking for a second-half breakout backed by legitimate damage, Merrill is near the top of the list.
The results have been outstanding.
But the contact has arguably been even better.
Merrill owns an 18.2% barrel rate , the highest among these ten hitters.
He's also sitting at a massive 54.5% hard-hit rate with a 93.8 mph average exit velocity .
That's not a player sneaking ground balls through the infield.
He's destroying the baseball.
His expected statistics completely support it.
Merrill's .414 wOBA comes with a .425 xwOBA , while his .631 slugging percentage is accompanied by a .651 xSLG .
The only obvious place we could expect some regression is his .342 BABIP .
But even if that falls, his contact quality gives him multiple ways to remain an impact fantasy hitter.
His bat tracking helps explain the power, too.
Merrill has produced a 53.5% Ideal Attack Angle rate while barreling more than 18% of his batted balls.
That's exactly the type of underlying combination I want to buy.
Verdict: REAL
Maybe Merrill doesn't continue hitting .324, but that's not what we're evaluating. The power and overall offensive production are being driven by legitimate elite contact.
6. Steven Kwan — FAKE
.386 AVG | .466 OBP | .465 SLG | .414 wOBA | 172 wRC+
A .386 batting average is going to get everyone's attention.
It's also exactly the type of number that should make fantasy managers immediately investigate what's happening underneath it.
Kwan's game has never been about overwhelming power, so we don't need him to post elite barrel numbers.
But even accounting for his unique skill set, this stretch has been heavily driven by batted-ball results.
Kwan owns a .422 BABIP .
That's the highest BABIP of anyone in this group.
His .386 average comes with only a .328 xBA , and his .414 wOBA sits well above his .367 xwOBA .
The Statcast contact profile also shows almost no power foundation beneath the hot streak.
Kwan has recorded a 0.0% barrel rate during this window with only a 27.5% hard-hit rate and 85.4 mph average exit velocity .
Again, Kwan doesn't need to barrel the baseball like Tatis or Merrill to succeed.
His elite contact ability is a genuine skill. A 9.3% strikeout rate is part of what makes Kwan such a valuable real-life and fantasy hitter.
But there's a difference between saying Kwan is a good hitter and saying his current 172 wRC+ represents his actual offensive level.
It doesn't.
Verdict: FAKE
Kwan's contact skills remain real. The .386 average and 172 wRC+ are not. A .422 BABIP combined with virtually no barrel production makes regression almost unavoidable.
7. Bryce Harper — REAL
.240 AVG | .408 OBP | .479 SLG | .387 wOBA | 145 wRC+
Harper is an interesting inclusion because his surface numbers don't even look like a massive hot streak.
That's exactly why I like the profile.
He's hitting only .240 during this stretch.
Underneath that average, however, Harper has been considerably better than the box score suggests.
His .387 wOBA comes with a .381 xwOBA , so the overall offensive production is essentially supported by the expected data.
The contact has been strong as well.
Harper owns a 10.4% barrel rate , 38.8% hard-hit rate and 90.3 mph average exit velocity .
His bat-tracking data is another positive.
A 43.9% Ideal Attack Angle rate isn't as outrageous as Tatis or Merrill, but it's another piece of evidence supporting the quality of the swing.
And then there's Harper's plate discipline.
He's walking 21.6% of the time .
That's an absurd number.
His .240 average isn't coming with some enormous BABIP that's destined to collapse, either. He's sitting at .290 .
There isn't much smoke and mirrors here.
If anything, Harper has produced a 145 wRC+ without his batting average taking off.
Verdict: REAL
Don't let the .240 average fool you. Harper continues to control the strike zone, produce legitimate power contact and generate expected statistics that largely support his actual results.
8. Seiya Suzuki — FAKE
.286 AVG | .405 OBP | .552 SLG | .411 wOBA | 163 wRC+
Suzuki is one of the more difficult calls on this list because there are legitimate positives in the profile.
A 14.7% barrel rate is excellent.
He's also producing a 46.9% Ideal Attack Angle rate , and his .552 slugging percentage isn't completely detached from his .446 xSLG .
But when we evaluate the entire profile, there are enough warning signs to expect his current production to come back toward earth.
Suzuki's .411 wOBA is significantly higher than his .360 xwOBA .
He's also carrying a .348 BABIP .
Meanwhile, his .286 average comes with only a .247 xBA .
The strikeout rate is another concern.
Suzuki has struck out in 23.8% of his plate appearances during this stretch, which gives him less margin for error once the batted-ball fortune begins normalizing.
This is important: calling Suzuki's current run "fake" does not mean his power is fake.
The power looks legitimate.
What looks unsustainable is the overall level of production represented by a 163 wRC+ and .957 OPS .
Verdict: FAKE
There are real skills underneath Suzuki's run, particularly the barrel production. But the wOBA/xwOBA gap, AVG/xBA gap and elevated BABIP suggest the total package has been outperforming its foundation.
9. Jac Caglianone — REAL
.309 AVG | .337 OBP | .588 SLG | .388 wOBA | 149 wRC+
This is where things get fun.
Caglianone has been producing like the type of impact power hitter fantasy managers hoped they were getting.
And the batted-ball numbers provide legitimate reasons to believe it.
He's posted a 14.6% barrel rate and 53.7% hard-hit rate while averaging 94.1 mph off the bat.
His max exit velocity?
115.3 mph.
The raw power is very, very real.
Caglianone's .388 wOBA is essentially supported by his .379 xwOBA , while his .588 slugging percentage comes with a .575 xSLG .
That's exactly what we want to see.
His .307 BABIP isn't doing anything outrageous, either.
Then we get to the bat-tracking numbers.
Caglianone owns a 47.1% Ideal Attack Angle rate and the highest Blast% of anyone in this group at 22.4% .
That's an extremely encouraging combination for a hitter whose fantasy ceiling is going to be driven heavily by power.
There is still risk.
His 4.0% walk rate is extremely low, and pitchers will eventually force him to adjust.
But we're asking whether the actual quality of his second-half contact is real.
The answer is yes.
Verdict: REAL
There will be volatility because of the approach, but you can't fake this kind of contact quality. The EV, hard-hit rate, barrel rate, expected slugging and Blast% all support the power breakout.
10. Ty France — FAKE
.336 AVG | .390 OBP | .564 SLG | .409 wOBA | 164 wRC+
France rounds out the list with another surface-level line that looks fantastic.
He's hitting .336 with a .954 OPS and 164 wRC+.
Underneath it?
Things get much shakier.
France owns a .383 BABIP , which immediately helps explain that .336 batting average.
His expected average sits at just .267 .
That's nearly a 70-point difference .
His slugging tells a similar story.
France has slugged .564 , but his xSLG is only .437 .
And finally:
.409 wOBA versus .333 xwOBA.
That's one of the biggest actual-versus-expected gaps on this entire list.
France's contact hasn't been bad. His 52.9% hard-hit rate and 93.6 mph average exit velocity are legitimate positives.
But his 9.2% barrel rate is relatively modest considering the massive slugging output, and the overall expected production simply doesn't support a 164 wRC+.
His 51.8% Ideal Attack Angle rate gives me some optimism that he can continue producing useful contact.
It just doesn't erase the massive gaps between his results and expected numbers.
Verdict: FAKE
France is hitting the baseball harder than some fantasy managers might realize, but his current production has gone far beyond what that contact has deserved. The .383 BABIP and enormous wOBA/xwOBA and SLG/xSLG gaps make him an obvious sell-high candidate.
Final Thoughts
One month of baseball is still a relatively small sample.
But it's long enough for us to start asking whether a player's hot second-half start is being driven by repeatable skills or temporary results.
That's the distinction fantasy managers need to make entering the most important part of the season.
Fernando Tatis Jr., Wilyer Abreu, Jackson Merrill, Bryce Harper and Jac Caglianone aren't simply producing impressive box scores. Their contact quality and expected statistics provide legitimate support for what we've seen.
On the other side, Bryson Stott, Chase Meidroth, Steven Kwan, Seiya Suzuki and Ty France have varying degrees of regression hiding beneath their second-half numbers.
That doesn't mean every "REAL" hitter will continue producing at exactly this level.
And it doesn't mean every "FAKE" hitter is suddenly going to become bad.
It's about identifying what we're actually buying.
As fantasy trade deadlines arrive and the playoffs approach, past production becomes increasingly irrelevant. Future production is what wins leagues.
The best way to project it isn't by asking who has been hottest.
It's by figuring out whose hot streak has the skills underneath it to continue.
