In-game price gaps lasted a median 1m 2s; pregame ones lasted 7m 53s.
01 · What changes
What changes once the game starts
- The state of the game. Score, clock, possession, fouls, pitch count. Every price is a fair chance given that state, plus the book's cut.
- The speed of change. Prices update on every play, and books suspend markets around big moments. A bet you can see is not always a bet you can place.
- The cut. In-game markets usually carry a larger margin than pregame ones, because books are pricing faster with less time to check.
- The delay. Books hold live bets for a few seconds before accepting, so the price you click can change before it stands.
02 · What does not
What does not change
The arithmetic is identical. A live price is still a percentage plus a cut, the fair chance is still found by taking the cut out of both sides, and a bet is still only good if the real chance is higher than the price charges for. Reading a price and taking the cut out apply unchanged.
What live betting adds is a set of new reasons a price can be wrong for a moment: a book slow to react to an injury on the field, a model that overreacts to an early run, a market reopening after a suspension. Each lasts seconds to a couple of minutes.
03 · Speed
Speed decides most live bets
Our scanner stamps every arbitrage with whether it appeared before or during the game. Since that stamp began, 53,749 arbs appeared in-game and lived a median 1m 2s. 58,913 appeared pregame and lived 7m 53s. A gap between books is the cleanest kind of live mistake, and even that closes in about a minute.

Before you bet
What this means for your next bet
- Decide your live bets before the game: which situations you would bet, at what price.
- Take the cut out of live prices exactly as you would pregame.
- Expect suspensions and accept delays. Never chase a price that moved while you clicked.
- Keep live stakes smaller. Speed, delays and bigger margins all add risk.

How we measured this
Arbs from the same ledger and admission rule as the arbitrage lifespan study, limited to rows written after the scanner began stamping whether each arb appeared before or during the game. Earlier rows carry no stamp and are left out. A life is first to last sighting, measured to the scan.

Questions3 questions
How do live betting odds work?
Books reprice the fair chance of each result after every play, using the score, clock and game state, then add their margin. Markets are suspended around big moments and reopen at new prices.
Is live betting harder than pregame betting?
It is faster. Prices change on every play, margins are usually larger and bets are held for a few seconds before they stand. In our log, gaps between books that appeared in-game lasted a median 1m 2s.
What is a good live betting strategy?
Plan the situations you would bet before the game, compare live prices with a fair price with the cut removed, keep stakes small and never chase a price that has already moved.
